Subjek kalimat ini adalah we dan si pembicara adalah bagian dari we. Waktu dia ngomongin kalimat ini, dia bisa saja baru terjaga, tetapi yang lainnya (anggota we lainnya) masih tidur. Jadi, kalimatnya juga makes sense kalau dinyatakan dengan Present perfect continuous.

We have been sleeping for two hours. Or,

We have been sleeping since two hours ago.

Tetapi kalu dia ngomongin hanya dirinya sendiri, kalimatnya tidak pas kalau dinyatakan baik dengan present perfect maupun present prefect continuous.

I have slept for two hours. NOT OK

I have slept since two hours ago. NOT OK

We have been sleeping for two hours. NOT OK

We have been sleeping since two hours ago. NOT OK

Dalam hal ini, kalimatnya sebaiknya dinyatakan dengan simple past tense.

I slept for two hours..

Or, dengan past perfect tense:

I had slept for two hours when I said that sentence.

Hi Sengene,

Dalam perfect tense, ALREADY dan YET hanya berfungsi untuk mengeraskan arti (memberi penekanan). Tanpanya, kalimat positif akan tetap bermakna SUDAH, dan kalimat negatif akan tetap bermakna BELUM.

Kalimat dalam present tense juga sering digunakan ALREADY, khususnya dalam non-verbal sentence, misalnya:

I'm already home.
I'm done already.

Namun demikian, akan lebih baik kalau digunakan perfect tense:

I've already been home.
I've done it already.

Hi Xigi,

The two sentences would be better if stated in past tense.

1. The students had lunch just now.
2. The plates were empty just now.

Why? Because their modifier of time (just now (tadi/barusan) is specific.

Great questions, MrDave.

1. The time span in which an action or happening took place could end in the past (past perfect tense), can end NOW/when the sentence is being expressed (present perfect tense), or in the future (future perfect tense).

2. NOT ALWAYS.
For example:

December 31, 2010. It was 9 pm. I had had my dinner. I had got myself perfectly dressed up. So, I had basically been ready to leave for the fireworks feast.
