Hi lisa_haryati,

Good question. Yes, the verb understand should take an adverb, such as, well, clearly, etc.

I understand English well now (Saya paham bahasa Inggris dengan baik sekarang).
I understand English clearly now (Saya paham bahasa Inggris dengan jelas sekarang).

However, in the sentence in question, the adverb is in the comparative form ( well, better, best; clearly, more clearly, most clearly).

I understand English better now (Saya paham bahasa Inggris dengan lebih baik sekarang).
I understand English more clearly now (Saya paham bahasa Inggris dengan lebih jelas sekarang).

Notes: The comparative and superlative form for the adverb well are the same as that of the adjective good (i.e. good, better, best).

Morning Mr. Swara, i want to ask you about example number 2:
“I understand English better now.” (Saya paham bahasa Inggris dengan lebih baik sekarang).
why did you use “better”? as i know, “understand” is a verb. it should be followed by adverb. it will become:
“I understand English well now.”
