Why? because you only want to know whether the person you’re questioning “SUDAH makan” atau “BELUM”, and you don’t need to know when he/she ate.

If you want to know when he/she ate, then you should use a question in past tense.

    A: How was the party last night?
    B: The party was great.
    A: Did you eat something there?
    B: Yes, I did.
